Need a help with Philips RC959 + Carin navigation system
Hello,
I bought a car with a Philips RC959 + Carin Navigation system. As far as I could find it is not a good idea to try to use it as a navigation system. It is too old and the new map and software are not available. RC959 is on German language. Does some one know where I could find user manual on English language? I tried in Google- but nothing. I will try to use it only like a stereo device. My second question is could I use this system / Philips RC959 + Carin Navigation/ as technical base / unit /? Could I use it with another navigation system such as TomTom, IGO, Garmin and etc.? Is it possible to load English language on RC959? I cannot speak and read German language and it’s very difficult to use the radio and cd .
Thank you in advance

As Manual you can use downloads.php?view=detail&id=42 , that is almost identical to your Carin 440 with RC 959 radio.
Many people are still using this system for navigation, and new maps are still available. The most recent is Navteq 2008-2

JW

The complete manual, for both Radio and Navigation can be found in http://www.vdodayton.com/sycomax/uis/me ... 000-GB.zip.
The MS/MR4000 is the VDO brand of the original Philips Carin 440. It is almost identical, the only exception is that the Philips has an analogue CD-Changer Entry, whereas the VDO has a digital Entry. So the CD Changers are different.
Personally I still use the MR4000 Radio and its CD Player. They are excellent in Reception Quality as well as in playing CD's.
You can change the language of the Radio in the set-up Menue, for the language in the Navigaton computer you need the Software CD. Do you have that with the unit, and which SW version is loaded now? You can see that in the Navigation Set-up menue.
Regards,
JW

Sorry, there was a . too many, at the end of the link.
It shall be http://www.vdodayton.com/sycomax/uis/me ... 000-GB.zip , that works and gives you all the manuals.
The present SoftWare version can be seen in your System Information, there HW and SW are mentionned. What do you see there?

JW

JW,
for the moment it isn't be possible to tell you SW and HW because I cant switch on the navigation computer. I should solve this problem frist and than I shall look for these data. For me it's seems that no power goes to the navigation computer. Without using the users manual that you gave me I found on my own how to switch between the languages. I found English but for the moment I can't store the menu to be on English. As soon as I leave the menu, the language is going back to German.

Also, I found as soon as the German language goes back I can't change it again because: in Instalation menu- language - German - I can't touch it/change it. I can do it if I use factory settings. But everything goes back as I wrote down in my previous post. Could you check this situation on your radio unit or to tell me how to solve the problem with the language.kbros76 schreef:JW,

Have you followed the instructions given on page 33 and 35 of the manual?
You need the System CD for changing the Language, therefore I asked: which SW version do you presently have in your system?

JW,
I hope we're talking about the same things- the instruction that you gave me are of the navigation system
Also,I found the the discs of Navtec 2008-2- I tried to use one of the disc / Eastern Europe/, but the system didn't accept the disc.

I had ask you about radio system. Before to use nav. system I have to deal with radio. First to change the languages. I bought the car with a dick: Carin navigation system version 2.00 - German language. I found it when I reloaded the SW. I don't know the year of issue but I think that this is 1998 or 1999 / also I have verseon 1.7 of the same system with issue date 1997/ . I hope that this is the SW version that you have asked me.Have you followed the instructions given on page 33 and 35 of the manual?

We were talking about different things, indeed
However, I think you only can change the language of your radio when NO Navigatiocomputer is connected. See the instruction on page 18 of the Radio MR4000

In my MR4000 I can change the language, no problem. But the difference with you is that I have no Navigation computer connected to it.
So, the only way to change the language in your radio is firstly disconnect it from the computer, then you can change it. However, I think it will return to its original language, i.e. the langauage in your computer, as soon as you reconnect that. In other words, the computer is leading.
You actually have SW version 2 in your computer. But what is the HardWare version, as you can find that in your system set-up? It is inmportant to know that, as depending on the version, you may be able to load SW 2.3 or 2.9. With the latter we can probably help you, but the version 2.3 will be difficult.
What is printed on that Navteq 2008-2 disk, can you post that here? We then may be able to understand why it is not working.

JW

I am aware of several instances where a similar Carin Equipment, not fitted with the latest systemsoftware, would not accept the Navteq Map CD's of at least 2004 and later. After updating to 2.3 or 2.9 also the newer cd's were accepted.kbros76 schreef:Also,I found the the discs of Navtec 2008-2- I tried to use one of the disc / Eastern Europe/, but the system didn't accept the disc.

These versions on what language are they? English? If they are on German I'm not sure I could use them. Two times I reboot the radio system and I changed the language on English but now I can't do it again. I don't know why? The radio remains on German- even I can't touch the sub menu -Language. It's only German .Gerritje schreef:I am aware of several instances where a similar Carin Equipment, not fitted with the latest systemsoftware, would not accept the Navteq Map CD's of at least 2004 and later. I can give you ftp address where you could upload them if you are going to give them to me for free. Otherwise you have to send me instruction about the payment and receiving the discs.

The SW does comprise all languages, but the version you can use (2.3 or 2.9) will be depending on your HW-version
Therefore: please, give us your HW-version. That information is vital

JW,
unfortunately I can't reach the system settings because I have only instalation disc / SW/. When I put again the SW disc it is asking me if I want to load SW and nothing more. I think if I want to manage this settings I should have a disk with maps. During the instalation is writen: version 1.7 .... German language. After the instalation I can change the language in sub menu on English but when I switch off the radio and turn on again the language goes back to German and I can't change it.

My understanding is that the navigation computer is connected to your Radio, and that you can switch on the Navigation by pressing the NAV Button. Is that correct?
If so, you can enter into Navigation, and then you can enter as well into the Menues.
In the Menu you'll find Settings. In that part you find System Information and subsequently HW and SW. That is the information we are looking for.
See the Manual.

Maybe you can't understand that each time when you wrote down your replay I've checked it and each time I writing you the result of it. Each time I am doing exactly what you wanted from me, exept the correct data of HW. As soon as I readed you last replay I went out to the car and check your instructions. The result is : After pressing Nav. button I am receiving a message / German language / but I can't understand it:
ACHTUNG!
BEACHTEN SIE IMMER DIE GULTIGEN VERKEHRSREGELN
PRESS OK!
After pressing ok! I am transfering to a menu where I can touch only sub menu - STAND BY then pressing it I am receiving message Insert CD All the rest of the nav. menu are pale and I can't touch them.

Please, as I wrote before, the language in the Radio can be changed when you disconnect it from the Navigation computer. But as soon as you reconnect the navigation computer, it will be back to German again, as the comuter is leading. That is what I know about it.
The SW 2.3 or 2.9 do not have anything to do with the Radio itself, only with the Navigation computer. And apparently something is wrong in that computer, as it should be possible to enter into its menu after pressing the NAV Button. That is my memory of how this system works.
In what country are you? Perhaps we can find somebody locally who could help you out of this....
Regards,
JW

I have been digging in some old files and found the information that your navigation computer with data WA039803 most likely is an old type and only suitable to Software version 2.3 as the maximum. Versions 2.5, 2.8 or 2.9 cannot be loaded and will be rejected by the computer, as it does not match.
After pressing the NAV Button, you should be able to enter the set-up menu and then something should be shown as on the picture. But unfortunately, your system refuses access to this.
But you wrote:
By the way, to be absolutely sure: the discs shall be entered into the computer, not into the radio.
What you could try is disconnecting the system, and subsequently reconnecting it again. There the sequence is important, the connction between the radio and the computer shall be made before you reconnect the computer to the 12V.
In respect to this the question: are the connections to A1 red wire => Battery plus 12V, and A3 violet wire => Contactplus (Key Switch) made correctly?
Regards,
JW

and that is confusing. Because you shall NOT enter the SW disc into the computer when you wish to enter the Menu of the computer.unfortunately I can't reach the system settings because I have only instalation disc / SW/. When I put again the SW disc it is asking me if I want to load SW and nothing more.

JW,JW schreef:Please, as I wrote before, the language in the Radio can be changed when you disconnect it from the Navigation computer.

JW
you were right about disconnection. I disconnect the radio and nav. unit- as soon as I made it, I had possibility to change the language on English and after switching off the language remains unchanged. Now we solve the problem with the language but withouth having nav. system. Do you think if I could find SW 2.3 / but English version/ I could use the latest version of the maps?
Also, I removed from the car nav. unit to find some data about HW but nothing. The only data on it is that I've allready sent to you.
About cabling, I didn't have time to see if it is ok. But if it isn't how could I load the SW?
Do you have SW 2.3?
