4200RS and CDs

I just got hold of a vdo 4200rs -second hand, on marktplaats. I registered it on C-IQ, that went fine. I am still trying to test if everything works and I keep running into one problem. When I try map CDs (cdr) it says on the display ''insert map cd'' so in other words it does not want to work with the CDR CDs I have. I did not get any orginal CDs with my player. I would like to make sure it works (in preview mode or whatever) before I start a C-IQ contract. Can someone help me? maybe someone who lives in the Den Haag area who has orginal cds? I just want to test if it works thats all.

Hello Jejack,

Are you Dutch? If so, you can type in Dutch... Ok, now in English an answer. You said you registered at C-IQ. What did you register? Did you register your navigation system only? Or did you also registered for content? If not, what content belongs to the former user (1 year Benelux or so)? You can ask for the latest CD's (they will send it to you for free). You can only use them, however, if you have registered for a country (or the whole of Europe). You can preview the maps only in " show destination on map". Anything else is, as far as I know, not possible....

I am south africa, now living in holland (my english is better than my dutch )
I have registered my system, not content. I am not sure what the former user had as contract, I guese benelux. So let me get this straight, if you take a CD from lets say Spain and you put it into your player..and lets just say you have no contract for spain via C-IQ, then will the CD not run? In other words when you go to navigation mode it will say '' insert map cd'' ?? BUT if you take a contract with C-IQ and enter all the code and all that.. then the CD will run?? So if I take a 1 day benelux contract today I can expect my CD to run? is this normal? I am just hoping that the system I bought is working okay.. thats all then I will be happy

Hello Jejack,

Just to make sure: You need the C-IQ M(onochrom)CD's with the MS 4200RS. Any other CD will not work in the 4200RS
They should have been handed over to you jointly with the unit, and I am wondering why you do not have them. Ask the seller for it, these are worthless to him Hopefully he has them as otherwise you have to start thinking that something might be wrong
He also should have informed you on what has already been booked at C-IQ


The other thing is that you can check on line with C-IQ what is activated, once you have registered yourselves. Did you do the registration via the C-IQ Internet possibility?
Lastly, even when you would not have booked any content, you still would be able to insert the C-IQ CD and get a response from the unit that you should book a content.

My system is fully registed, everything else works, I can play music cds, listen to the radio I can even see how many satelites I am connected to with the GPS, its only the map cdrs that I have that dont work. I guess I will have to call c-iq then. Any other tips or sugestions are welcome..

With the unit originally delivered to the previous owner definitely a complete set of MCD's was supplied. As well as a Voucher enabling him to activate a content at no costs. This content can be one or two years Benelux, one year Europe, all with free of charge delivery of new map releases or an unlimited content which does not contain free of charge delivery of new CD's.
In case you cannot get the required set and voucher from the seller, the best you can do is give C-IQ a call indeed and check what has been done so far, and ask them what the content of the voucher should be. They should be able to tell you this based on the ID numder of your 4200RS.

Which SW version do you have in your unit? That also may give an idea on the history of this unit.
In case you have version 5.06 your unit is a "BPM-toestel" implicating that you cannot insert new adresses or change them during driving. Only at full standstill of the car this will be possible. There is no way to change this in the menu.

Okay i just got off the phone with c-iq. My system is an unlimited content system, I am happy about that. He said it will only work with 2003-1, i dont really understand that and i asked him to explain but it was not very clear. He also said if I want it to work with newer CDs- then i have to order with c-iq, makes sence.
BUT I dont have the 2003-01 cd..so now what? The guy i got the system from does not have any cds anymore.

You can request a new (un)limited contract. You get the latest CD's and you can than use the latest database. When you subscribe to a limited contract you will get new updates and new software automtically. So, I would suggest you request a new contract. Benelux costs €89,00 per year (when you do it for more years, you will get a bit of reduction). Europe costs €169,00 per year (here you will also get a reduction for more years). These are the prices for the limited contract... I don't know what the prices are for the unlimited contract.

The contract "works" as follows: when you have a limited contract (let's say for a year), you will receive new map CD's and software CD's automatically (free of charge). You can use these CD's as long as the contract is valid. When it expires you cannot use your navigationsystem anymore. You must then subscribe to a new contract.

When you have a unlimited contract you will only get the map CD's once and then you can use these CD's (dependant of what countries have been paid for) as long as you want. When you want new maps, you should call and make a new contract. Only then you will get new map CD's.

Is it more clear now?

So that guy has sold you an incomplete system, hopefully you did not pay much for it

The reason why only 2003-1 MCD's will work is that it is an unlimited contract, so you are not entitled to receive later versions at no cost. Putting into your system CD's of a later version does require a new key which has to be given by C-IQ, for which you have to pay.

My suggestion is to try making a bargain with C-IQ, by accepting a limited contract at a reduced price. I do not know what content you wish to take, is it Benelux only or shall it be Europe? Depending on that I think there are some possibilities as I recently read in another posting in this forum.

Whilst typing my reaction I see that ToHo has posted as well.
Please keep in mind that entering into a new unlimited contract will cost you € 359,- for Europe or 169,- for the Benelux
That's why I wrote that I hope you did not pay too much for the unit

Based on this, I suggest that you try to "negotiate" a cheep limited contract. See my posting above.

No I did not pay much at all, . I am very happy with what I got so far. I only bought it because it was so cheap.

I think I will keep it like it is for now until I am sure it works. So that means I need the 2003-1 cd, I guess I will have a look on the net to see if I can find it.
If it works with the 2003 cd I will change my contract like you both said. I will let you all know how things turn out. Thanks for all your help.

after a week of trying and trying.. I could not get hold of the 2003-1 teleatlas CD, so called C-IQ and changed over to a limited contract. I got 2 years benelux for no cost as long as I take the flits package for 29 euros. Thank you all for your help and coments!

That's good news and congratulations, you made a very good deal indeed
You now have, or shortly will receive the latest CD's and operating SW, enabling you to use the flits package.

Apparently C-IQ still is prepared to do this, as I suggested before:
